Fact File: UNWANTED pregnancy

1. About 85% of sexually active women who do not use contraceptives become pregnant within a year.

2. Unwanted pregnancy in an unmarried girl in India can be a mental and emotional disaster.

3. Scare of confronting a doctor and over the counter availability of pregnancy kit and abortion pills can create havoc as it might be an ECTOPIC PREGNANCY.

4. Pills if not taken as per the indication can cause incomplete or failed abortion.

5. No partner and family support can increase the turmoil.

6. Consequence also may affect future fertility.

7. Pregnancy test should be done after a few days of missing the period (preferably 5-7 days).

8. Sometimes the fear of being pregnant alone causes enough stress to delay the period.

9. In India a pregnancy can be terminated up to 20 weeks. However it is very risky after 12 weeks.

10. A lot of formalities have to be fulfilled before MTP according to the MTP act in India.

Prevention

  •   No method of contraception gives 100% protection.
  •   Condom is the only contraceptive method considered highly effective in reducing the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's).
  •   Birth control pills, Implant and IUDs do not protect against STD infection.
  •   Safe period and other natural methods of contraception have a very high failure rate.
